An over ring accelerator that fits onto the steering wheel to modify driving controls. Acceleration is achieved by lightly pushing the ring towards the steering wheel. Only one model available.

More Details

The system functions using a potentiometer and dedicated ECU that interfaces with the vehicle's original electronic system, commonly known as 'fly-by-wire'. The dedicated software enables individual programming to suit both driver and vehicle.

While accelerating/driving with the Over Ring Accelerator, both hands remain on the steering wheel, however remaining in easy reach of the brake lever, gear lever, auxiliary commands on the dashboard and steering wheel, and flaps for sequential gearshift.

The system does not interfere with the vehicle's original electronics and the quick release function allows removal of the accelerator ring, enabling others to use the original vehicle controls.

Suitable for any vehicle type and compatible with airbags.

Safety Features
The safety cut out mechanism eliminates acceleration on vehicle start up and when braking is applied. In the event both accelerator and brake are applied simultaneously, the accelerator is cancelled.

Installation

The product must be installed by an authorised agent.

The RMS requires evidence that the safety standards originally built into the vehicle have been maintained. Therefore, the modifications must be certified by an "Engineering Signatory" who is recognised by the RMS for this purpose. If the modifications are satisfactory, the signatory will issue an "Engineering Certificate" which must be presented to the RMS. The RMS maintains a list of "Engineering Signatories".

Licence & Insurance Requirements

The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) guidelines do not allow a person to drive independently with a modified driving control without having completed an RMS Disability Driving Test or alternatively having completed an occupational therapy on road assessment to establish their safety. The modified driving control is then endorsed on the drivers licence. Once the modified driving control is not required the person would need to demonstrate to the RMS that they could drive safely without it, before the endorsement could be removed from their licence. This is done by being retested by a driver trained occupational therapist (see Driving Assessment & Education minor group on this database).
