Short Description

A battery powered rear wheel drive wheelchair with a rigid frame. The wheelchair folds down to fit into an integral case. Available in two models: standard Boxway model and Boxway Plus with a headrest, elevating legrests and powered tilt in space and powered seat height adjustment. The chair is depth and width adjustable with seat widths from 410mm to 520mm. Load capacity is 100kg.

Frame
Rigid folding frame. Suspension spring systems on rear wheels ABS body, steel sub frame. Push handles fold in towards backrest when not in use.

The Boxway Plus model has a handle each side of the seat front to assist with transferring on / off the seat. It also has powered tilt in space and powered seat height adjustment.

Footplate

Transporting
Car can be folded with all components inside the case which is transported on the wheelchair wheels. The case can be power driven by using the hand held joystick control or pulled along on the rear wheels via a strap. The hand held control can be used to guide the case up ramps into the rear of a vehicle.
Vehicle tie down attachments are standard.

Factors To Consider

People of short stature may have difficulty accessing the seat from the front of the Boxway due to the longer than average distance. This may be overcome by removing an armrest and transferring sideways onto the seat.
The space allowed on public transport for carrying mobility equipment is an area of 1300mm by 800mm.

Wheelchair spaces
All new Sydney buses feature special 'kneeling suspension' and a ramp to provide easy access for less mobile passengers.

There are spaces for two wheelchairs on the new buses. These will accommodate most manual and electric wheelchairs with max. length 1250mm, max. width 750mm, max. turning circle1500mm, and max weight 200kg.

For safety reasons, passengers in wheelchairs are advised to face the back of the bus, bracing their wheelchair against the side of the space, applying the brakes and securing the seat belt of the wheelchair.

Wheelchair accessible buses display a blue and white wheelchair sign on the front of the bus, and on the easy access door.

Licence & Insurance Requirements

In NSW, motorised wheelchairs that weigh less than 110 kg and cannot travel at more than 10 km/h do not have to be registered, provided they are being used by a person with mobility problems. A person driving a motorised wheelchair under these circumstances is defined as a pedestrian under the Australian Road Rules and is permitted to travel on a footpath or nature strip adjacent to the road.

Vehicles exempt from registration are covered by the nominal defendant scheme (administered by the Motor Accidents Authority) if they are at fault in an accident in NSW on a road or road-related area and cause injury to another person. However, this cover is only valid in NSW.
