Course Description

The course is designed as an introduction for therapists and aged care workers to assist with the care of a person diagnosed with dementia.
The course explores assistive technology and strategies to enable people to remain safe in their environment and to promote independence. Areas covered include:

• Orientation and memory loss
• Maintaining relationships
• Communication and decision-making
• Equipment to make everyday living easier
• Home environment and safety
• Medication management

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Define dementia and its causes
• Identify and understand the benefits of assistive technology
• Apply knowledge of assistive technology to people with dementia
• Be aware of communication strategies that can assist people with dementia
• Understand how the home environment can support function for people with dementia and memory loss

Cancellation & Refunds

When a cancellation or refund is unavoidable, you can:

• Substitute a person in the course
• Request a refund up to 7 days prior to the course (less 10% admin fee)
• Request a transfer to another course

The ILC reserves the right to cancel a course when there are unforeseen circumstances. Notification of cancellation will be given by phone. If we cannot place the applicant in another course, we will refund the full amount.

The ILC is accessible for people with a disability. Additional learning support during training and assessment can be arranged with prior notice.

Ruwani Siriwardene

B.App.Sc.Occupational Therapy

Ruwani Siriwardene works as an Occupational Therapist at the Independent Living Centre NSW providing advisory services in the area of Assistive Technology. Ruwani has also completed further study in the area of access, environmental design and their application in enhancing functional outcomes as well as Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
