National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is an independent statutory agency whose role is to implement the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will support a better life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. Their priority is to ensure people with disability continue to get the support they need. The NDIS is being introduced in stages in each state and territory of Australia.

More Details

NDIS Rollout
* While limited trials of the NDIS have begun in various states, roll out of the full scheme will commence progressively from July 2016
* The NDIS is being introduced in stages, because it's a big change and it is important to get it right and make it sustainable. Existing service users and new participants will enter the scheme progressively. The NDIS website shows access requirements and areas where the NDIS is available.

People with disability
* The NDIS provides individualised support in the form of Information and referral services, support to access community services and activities, individualised plans and supports, and early intervention-for people with permanent and significant disability,
* If you are a person with disability and you meet the access requirements you can become a participant in the scheme. If you do not meet the access requirements, and you live in a launch site, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) may be able to provide you with information about other supports that could be of benefit to you and assist in referral to these.

The NDIA is also working with local communities to improve inclusion of people with disability and build awareness of disability. They also aim to foster innovation, research and best practice to better support people with disability.

What help can I get?
* Everyone's needs, preferences and aspirations are different. The NDIS provides information and referrals, support to access community services and activities, personal plans and supports over a lifetime

Funding
* The NDIS is an insurance scheme because, similar to the way insurance funds work, funding required by the NDIS will be determined by first estimating the support needs of the disabled population. Then, as the scheme is put into practice, this will be compared with reality and adjusted.
* The amount of funding you will get will be directly related to how your disability affects key areas of your life. You'll be funded on an annual basis to purchase services and equipment from various providers-and as your situation and health changes, you can apply to have your plan adjusted.

Providers
* NDIS Providers are individuals or organisations registered with the NDIA to deliver a support or product to a participant of the NDIS. Each participant in the Scheme will have an individualised plan that identifies the outcomes they wish to achieve, the disability supports that will be funded by the NDIS, and other supports the person requires. Participants have choice and control over the providers they engage to deliver supports in their plan.

NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency)
* The National Disability Insurance Agency is the Government body that oversees and implements the Scheme. The Scheme is the idea, the NDIA make it happen.
The NDIA's main functions are:
* Delivering the NDIS
* Managing, advising and reporting on NDIS finances
* Promoting awareness of disabilities and disability issues
* Collecting data about disabilities and disability support
* Conducting research into disability and disability support
