Short Description
Three styles of lift which can transport a person in a wheelchair. They are for use in single occupancy dwellings or when used in the public domain their use is restricted to persons with limited mobility. They are built to meet Australian Standards. Each lift is either a `through the floor' installation or can be installed in an exterior shaft. If this lift is to be used in a public building it must comply with some parts of the BCA. Automatic Hydraulic Lift:
Up to 12 metres ( 5 floors)
. Meets requirements in homes and commercial premises for disabled access up to five levels.
. Multi speed fully automatic with speed changing and car scheduling
controlled by a programmable controller (PLC).
. Capacity for 4 persons or a person in a wheelchair plus 2 persons.
. The handrails are generally located at the side of the lift but in some construction situations the handrail needs to be at the back of the lift.
Installation
In NSW the owner or controller of the lift (if not the owner) is required to register their lift with WorkCover. They need to complete Form PL2 Application For Item Registration of Lift / Escalator and Moving Walkway. A fee of $65 is charged. The applicant must state that the plant has been inspected by a competent person and is safe to operate (use).
It is compulsory that the lift be inspected annually by a competent person. WorkCover requires payment for registration as well as an annual fee.

It is an offence to operate plant that is not correctly registered under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001.
