More Details
Accessories to Augmentative Communication Devices and Myoelectronic Equipment (including computers) are many and varied. They include keyboards, wrist rests, arm supports, moisture proof guards and carry bags. It is always worth investigating what accessories are commercially available for products, particularly communication devices which may come with external speakers,
printers, keyguards, mounting systems, remote displays and various carrying cases as options which all add to the features and to the price.
Computer accessories available through general computer suppliers can assist some people who have disabilities. These may include items such as:
. copy holders
. monitor arms
. keyboard drawers
. disc holders
. disc loaders
. angled keyboard rests
. thick foam wrist rests
. footrests
These common office items can be more than a convenience to someone with a disability, they can make an important contribution to the way they use technology. For example, a person with a visual impairment may benefit from a monitor arm to improve their viewing angle and bring the computer screen closer to them.
There are also accessories designed specifically for people with disabilities. There are various keyboard accessories in addition to slope boards to rest work, typing sticks and suction cup hand holders. Wrist rests are used to provide support to the wrist and forearm to reduce fatigue and improve comfort and stability. Some examples include:
ADJUSTABLE WRIST REST
The adjustable wrist rest provides a range of height positioning options. Twisting the knobs at each side of the rest enables modifications to suit a variety of keyboard heights. This wristrest had a padded cushion covered in a smooth washable material which can be removed for cleaning. The wristrest is fixed to the desktop with slip resistant round pads.
WRIST SAVER WRIST REST AND WRIST SAVER MOUSEPAD
These are moulded plastic wrist supports for keyboard or mouse use. They are designed to support the wrist while typing. The supports are covered in foam rubber and a durable fabric cover.
MOVABLE FOREARM SUPPORTS
Moveable forearm rests that have been designed to allow full access to the work station with an operating span of 800mm. Resting the forearms helps to minimise muscle activity in the shoulders. The rests attach to a desk or table with a clamp that can be adjusted to fit onto surfaces which are wider than standard desks. The height of the rests is also adjustable.
