Short Description
Software is essential to the meaningful use of computers. The software we choose should correspond to the tasks we wish to perform. For example writing letters using word processing, storing and manipulating information in a database or spreadsheet, having fun through games, or learning via resource packages and educational programs.
More Details
Features of software can vary from one program to the next. Some features may be essential for a particular individual, and other features may be desirable, and still others may be inappropriate. It is impossible to list or keep abreast of all available software, given rapid changes and developments in products. Seeking advice can be difficult when sales people do not understand your particular requirements and goals. When considering software for special
needs, the factors essential to the process of selection include:
(i) developing clear goals and keeping these in mind when searching for software;
(ii) identifying the features of a software program that are essential in
achieving outcomes (eg. appropriate feedback, visual contrasts, suitable duration);
(iii) identifying features of a software program that are desirable in
achieving outcomes (eg. it may be desirable to have auditory feedback but essential to have a white on black visual contrast);
(iv) critical evaluation of software (this is an ongoing process of review
as products and individual needs change).
