Assistive Technology Guide - Door Closers

Door closers are commonly used in public buildings to return the door to the closed position after use. Door closers do not assist in opening a door. AS1428.1 recommends that the use of door closers be avoided because of the increased strength required to open a door against the force of the closer. Spring hinges and gravity hinges may be used as door closers in limited application.

BACK CHECK
* Mandatory on fire doors. This cushions or slightly impedes the opening of the door past 75-80 degrees from the closed position.

DELAYED ACTION
* Delayed action door closer has a closing speed delay valve built into the internal mechanism. It retards the closing speed of the door from the open position to approximately 70 degrees from the closed position at which point normal closing speed commences. Maximum time delay is dependent on the angle to which the door is opened.
* Useful where wheelchairs and other wheeled traffic requires free passage.

HOLD OPEN
* Consists of an accessory mounted on the body of the unit, that is adjustable to hold the door open at any angle until the door is positively released by a slight pull. The door may be opened beyond the hold open point without affecting the operation of the hold open device.

Standards

Standards
Some assistive technology needs to meet Australian or other standards. Standards may relate to materials, manufacturing and installation. Products that meet Australian or international standards will have written certification. To find out if a product meets Australian Standards ask the supplier to show you the certificate. For more information about standards also see

TGA
Many of the items on the Assistive Technology Australia website are categorised as a Medical Device. Medical devices that are approved for use in Australia have been entered into a national database called the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), which is maintained by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). You can ask the supplier for the ARTG number for the device you wish to purchase and search the ARTG for the entry. To access information on the ARTG visit www.tga.gov.au

When buying a medical device it is advisable to only choose a medical device that is recommended by a healthcare professional and has been included on the ARTG.

FOR PUBLIC BUILDINGS
For all buildings which must comply with the Australian standard AS1428.1 - Design for access and mobility, Part 1: General requirements for access - new building work", the following requirements apply to the use of door closers:

"For doors other than fire doors and smoke doors where a door closer is fitted, the force required to operate the door shall not exceed the following:
(i) To initially open the door - 19.5N
(ii) To swing the door 6N
(iii) To hold the door open between 60 and 90 degrees 7.5N

NOTE: Where door closers are required, devices such as adjustable delayed action multi sized door closers, rising butt hinges, and the like , are recommended."

Clause 10.2.10 stipulates that where WC doors (including those to ambulant accessible cubicles) open outwards they "shall have a hinge mechanism that holds the door in a closed position without the use of a latch."
As at March 2002, The Dorma TS93 most closely aligns with the specifications of AS1428.1
