A specially designed two way hinge system allows a door to open outwards in an emergency.

Consists of three components:
. Privacy set - for normal door operation and to act as the second handle in emergency operation.
. Emergency escape handle - remains in position flat against door in normal use. In emergencies provide a handle for easy removal of door.
. Escape hinges - two specially designed hinges with "Escape Sleeve" which slips off the hinge allowing door to open outwards.

More Details

An escape hinge set specifically designed for use in hospitals,
retirement villages and hostels, nursing homes, etc. It allows a person
outside a WC compartment to remove the inward swinging door in cases of emergency, eg. person fallen against inside of door.

The stainless steel escape hinge set consists of two specially designed hinges which have an escape sleeve, and an escape handle. The hinges act as standard fixed pin hinges when the door is being operated normally. In an emergency the escape sleeve slips off the hinge allowing the door to be opened outwards.

The escape handle remains in the fold away position against the door while the door is being operated normally. In emergencies the handle allows the door to be removed quickly.

The Australian standard AS1428.1 "Design for access and mobility, Part 1: General requirements for access - New building work" includes requirements for emergency access to occupants of toilets.

Clause 10.2.10 WC doors,
requires that "Inward-opening or sliding doors shall be capable of either being opened outwards or removed from the outside."
