The NSW Ombudsman is an independent and impartial watchdog body.
The service investigates and reports on complaints about the conduct of a NSW agency or their employee, including both government and some non government agencies. Services are offered free of charge

NSW agencies include government departments and statutory authorities, for example, police, local councils, schools, universities and TAFEs and some non government agencies, for example, area health services, non government schools, child care centres, agencies providing community services.
The Ombudsman investigates conduct which may be:
- illegal
- unreasonable, unjust or oppressive
- improperly discriminatory
- based on improper motives or irrelevant grounds
- based on a mistake of law or fact
The service reviews the situation of people with a disability and children in care. It also monitors the delivery of community services and coordinates the community visitors program to residential services.
