Short Description
An occupational therapist at Lourdes Hospital (Dubbo) offers a driving assessment and rehabilitation service to people in the Northern cluster of the Greater Western Area Health Service. The service may consist of both an off - road screening and an on - road driving assessment.

The service is offered to anyone over the age of 18 years with the following conditions:
. Dementia
. Cerebrovascular Accident (stroke)
. Arthritis
. Back and / or neck injuries
. Parkinson's Disease
. Multiple Sclerosis
. Loss of arm / leg
. Cerebral Palsy
. Traumatic Brian Injury
. Developmental disability
. Spinal Cord injuries
. Decreased movement in arm / leg
The Programme can offer:
. Comprehensive off road assessment, which includes physical screen, cognitive screen, vision screen, road law and knowledge test and an on - road assessment conducted by an Occupational Therapist.
. Assessment, advice and prescription on suitability of vehicle adaptations and modifications.
. Liaison with RTA medical unit providing recommendations of an individual's abilities in driving.
. Advice and prescription of seating / back cushions for driving.
. Advice regarding selection of an appropriate vehicle.
. Driving lessons that may assist a person to regain driving skills, confidence or adapt to modifications.
. Lourdes Hospital has access to a modified automatic vehicle with dual braking system and a variety of vehicle adaptations.
. During the programme consultation may also be required from other health professionals.
