Short Description

The J3 Back is a lightweight rigid contoured backrest suitable for manual or powered wheelchairs. It is designed to replace the wheelchair's sling upholstery. Available with a wide range of backrest heights, depths and widths. Additional supports can be added to the backrest to accommodate varying seating and positioning needs. Attaches to the wheelchair back canes via mounting hardware with a quick release mechanism. Suitable for adults or children.

Models

The recommended process for deciding which backrest to order is to select (in this order):

1. Contour Depth (amount of lateral support required - Posterior; Posterior & Lateral; Posterior & Deep Lateral)
2. Backrest Width (considering maximum user trunk width and chair back cane width)
3. Level of support (lower thoracic; mid thoracic; upper thoracic; shoulder height)
4. Back Support Height (short; medium; tall)
5. Mounting Hardware (standard or extended)
6. Additional requirements - inserts, harnesses, headrest.

The prescription form details a matrix of options depending on the above requirements. Please contact the supplier to discuss your needs to ensure you order the correct backrest. As a basic guide, depending on the contour depth required the following sizings are available:

Posterior
Available in all backrest widths, level of support, and back support heights. Some limitations occur, please contact supplier or refer to prescription form for details.

Posterior & Lateral
Available in all backrest widths, and most levels of support, and all back support heights. Not available with lower thoracic level of support. Some limitations occur, please contact supplier or refer to prescription form for details.

Posterior & Deep Lateral
Available in all backrest widths, and some levels of support, and all back support heights. Not available with lower thoracic or mid thoracic level of support. Some limitations occur, please contact supplier or refer to prescription form for details.

More Details

Cover
Removable three way stretch cover. Additional covers can be ordered separately if required.

Adjustment
Refer to user manual for details regarding how to adjust the J3 seat angle. Depth, angle and width are adjustable within the limitations of the mounting hardware and the backrest frame.

Accessories
A number of additional seating inserts are available and can be ordered at any time. These include:
* Lumbar inserts
* Lateral inserts
* Pelvic inserts
* Wedges.
* Chest harnesses and headrests are also available with the upper thoracic and the shoulder height backrests only.

Compatibility
The J3 Back is designed to be compatible with most wheelchairs with the following exceptions - Wheelchairs that are angularly adjustable, recline or tilt and result in a back angle greater than 60 degrees from the vertical should not be used.

Factors To Consider

Due to their potential to exacerbate deformity, postural support products need regular monitoring to ensure that their positioning and use remains appropriate to the users needs and body shape.

Warning
Wheelchairs that are angularly adjustable such as recline or tilt and result in a back angle greater than 60 degrees from the vertical should not be used. Use with these types of wheelchairs may cause the back to accidentally disconnect from the wheelchair resulting in a fall and the potential for serious injury. If you cannot determine that the back canes are compatible please contact your authorised Sunrise Medical provider or Sunrise Medical customer service.

Installation

The Jay J3 Backrest must be installed with the appropriate hardware mounting.

The backrest can be removed by pushing the release levers forward to unlock on each side. Once both levers are in the forward position, lift the back straight up using the handle located on the top of the back.

To reattach the back to the hardware receivers, line up the backrest pins to the receivers and push into place. When properly inserted the pins will "click" to a locked position.

WARNING
If you are uncertain if you have heard the locking "click", pull up on the back using the handle to ensure that it has been securely locked.

NOTE: Locking Pins - The J3 Back comes with two locking pins which, when secured, prevent the back from being released from the chair. To lock, insert the pins into the mounting receivers. Remove the pins if the quick release capability is desired.

Maintenance

Refer to User Manual for specific details.

Sunrise recommends that all fasteners be checked for wear, such as loose bolts or broken components, every 6 months. Loose fasteners should be re-tightened according to the installation instructions. All fasteners should be tightened to torque specifications as stated in the hardware installation section. Contact your authorised Sunrise Medical supplier immediately to replace any broken components. Do not continue to use the system after identifying loose or broken components.

Cleaning
NOTE- When disassembling the back for cleaning, note the position of the Velcro Spine Align Components for correct reassembly.

To Clean Back Cover
Remove cover by detaching Velcro. Detach cover from back shell.
Locate zipper on bottom of the cover and unzip. Remove foam and turn cover inside out. Zip cover closed to avoid snagging. Machine wash in warm water (50C). Drip or tumble dry on low heat.

DO NOT: dry clean covers or use industrial washers and dryers to clean cover. Do not steam autoclave. Do not bleach.

Reinsert the foam into the cover. Please note, the base has two layers of foam. When reinserting the foam, ensure that the thinner "light grey" foam is facing the shell. Once the foam is secured inside the cover, zip cover closed.

To Clean Back Shell
Shell may be wiped clean with soap and water. No other maintenance should be required.

To Clean Positioning Components
Positioning components can be wiped clean with soap and water.
DO NOT immerse positioning components underwater.
