The National Stroke Foundation functions:
. Educating the public about the risk factors and signs of stroke and promoting healthy lifestyles.
. Working with all stakeholders to develop and implement policy on the prevention and management of stroke.
. Encouraging the development of comprehensive and coordinated services for all stroke survivors and their families.
. Encouraging and facilitating stroke research.

Programs and services provided include:
. Telephone Support Line - the toll free 1800 StrokeLine provides information, referrals and support and is available across Australia.
. Support Services - support groups exist in many parts of Australia for stroke survivors to make contact with others for the purpose of peer support. There are also referrals to support programs for carers.
. Information Services - information about the types of stroke, how it happens, facts, figures and statistics on stroke are available free of charge.
. Education - a range of publications help to educate the public and health professionals on recognising the signs of stroke as well as prevention, treatment and recovery from stroke.
. Promotion - various awareness campaigns and events to raise funds are organised throughout the year including National Stroke Week and Know your numbers.
. Fund raising - fun events throughout the year which raise funds to help beat stroke, including Beat the Boat and Counter Stroke Golf.
. Community Education Programs - development of a health professional network responsible for delivering educational seminars to community groups on behalf of the Foundation.
. Research - funding of high quality research through award of grants.
