More Details
Structure
* The front of the cushion is sloped downward to help prevent pressure under the legs
* The under sides of the cushion are sloped so when used in a wheelchair the cushion will sit flatter, though the cushion can also be used on lounge chairs
* The four corner ties help hold the cushion in position if the user shuffles onto or off the chair
Covers
Three types of covers are available
Polyester - 4 Way Stretch Cover
* This four way stretch material has been designed to wick moisture away from the body
* It also has an anti bacterial finish
* Clean by hand or machine wash up to 80C. Air dry or cool tumble dry only.
Waterproof - 4 Way Stretch Cover
* This four way stretch material is also designed to prevent perspiration build up, but is waterproof for people who are incontinent.
* The waterproof material has been sewn together so the actual seams and the covered zip may not allow water penetration
* The cover has ties to enable the back of the cushion to be tied to a chair and the front reservoir extension to be wrapped under the front of the chair then tied to the back of the chair.
* The material is fire retardant with anti bacterial and anti fungal qualities
* Clean by wiping with normal disinfectant or unzip and remove cover for hand or machine washing up to 80C. Air dry or cool tumble dry only.
Heat Sealed - 4 Way Stretch Cover
* This is the same four way stretch material as the Waterproof Cover
* It has been completely heat sealed to help prevent cross infection when the cushion may be used by different patients in a general hospital
* There are no sewn seams or openings for zips, hook and loop or other fasteners
* Pelican's air transfer 'Air-Tube' will allow the air in the cushion to transfer to a 'reservoir' when the user sits down. After the user has stood up, the air in the reservoir will return to the cushion.
* The cushion can be turned over so the top section can be underneath and the bottom section on top.
NOTE:If the air cannot move, the heat sealed cover will act like a balloon. This will be uncomfortable and unstable and it may even burst at the seams.
Cleaning
As the cover cannot be removed for hand or machine washing, spray and wipe clean with disinfectant. Seek advice from your Infection Control department as they may over ride the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
Factors To Consider
After a period of time all foam, including Memory Foam can lose it's recovery quality and flatten out. This is the time the cushion should be replaced
All cushions must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the product material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion. Where bottoming out occurs even with correct use (eg correct choice and depth of foam, correct inflation level) , a different product may need to be considered.
Ensure that the item is not accidentally placed upside down or back to front
It is advisable that a health professional be consulted when considering a suitable pressure care product.
Foam must be regularly replaced as it losses its spring and becomes hard after long term use
