More Details
Speech Quality
* The device uses high quality digitised, or recorded, speech playback
* There is a limit of two and a quarter seconds of recording time per message
* There is a limit of one and a half seconds of auditory prompt recording time per message
* Volume is loud and clear
Programming
* Tech/Scan 8 Plus has eight message per level. The key arrangement can't be changed
* There are eight levels to use, giving a total of sixty four possible pre-recorded message options
* Overlays, the visual representation of what message is recorded on each cell, are inserted from the side of the keyguard and held in place. The scan LED light is built into the keyguard of each cell so it can always be seen
* Recording of both the main message and the auditory prompts is easy using a simple process
* Auditory scanning prompts can be recorded to identify each row and then each cell. This is helpful for people limited vision
* Levels are changed and volume modified by knobs at the back of the Tech/Scan 8 Plus
Access
* Direct touch access via the touch sensitive touch pad
* A light press of the cell activates the message
* Switch scanning access via one or two switch input. Scanning patterns include one switch automatic linear scanning or two switch step scanning
* Three different scan speeds are available for the scan patterns. Slow steps at four and a half seconds, medium at two and a quarter seconds and fast at one second per step
* A beeping tone is also available to augment the visual scanning cues
* Key layout can't be changed and is set always at eight cells, two rows of four
* Keys are seventy five millimetres long and wide, providing a larger target area for people accessing the device directly
* A keyguard separating the cells from one another is built into the top of the Tech/Scan 8 Plus and is approximately five millimetres deep per key. For people directly accessing the messages, this provides a guide down to the cell and assists with selecting the message
Portability
* The Tech Series devices are lightweight, very portable and durable
* The casing is built of high impact plastic and comes with a carry strap
* A carry case is an optional accessory as well
* A DAESSY Mount plate for wheelchair supported mounting systems may be more appropriate for this switch access model
* Runs on rechargeable batteries and a battery low indicator light assists with power management
Accessories
* Carry case
* Deluxe carry case
Factors To Consider
Output
* Be aware of the speaker position on the device and take steps not to block the sound
* Recorded speech output only
Input
* This device is designed to be used with overlays. They provide the visual guide to the recorded message and are created with either the included software and a printer or other software packages
* Recording should be performed in a quiet environment so background noise doesn't effect recording quality
Access
* Both direct access and switch access are available in the device. Ensure that the access method settings have been correctly setup. Also consider writing these settings down for safe keeping
* Switch may need to be purchased at the same time as the device
Portability
* Consider suitability for people who are independently mobile and the accessories available to assist
* Consider positioning options at the same time as the device. Effective access to the device is linked to appropriate positioning
Programming
* As with all speech generating devices, as the communication needs of the person using the speech generating device changes, any pre-stored messages may also require changing. This may or may not be an ongoing process
* Other overlay making software might be required if particular symbol sets are needed
Special Features
* Auditory prompt recording needs to be planned at the same time as the main messages
Batteries and Charging
* The device uses inbuilt rechargeable batteries that will need replacing in due course. This will be an additional cost
Mounting and Installation
* Some wheelchair mounting options are available. A proper assessment of the access need should be a part of the entire prescription process
Accessories
* Consider if the device has options that may assist with access needs
* Consider splash guards or waterproof covers to protect the device from moisture, if available
* Are there any future consumables that will be required over the lifetime for the device; for example, batteries.
Manuals and Support
* Detailed information to support programming and use of this device is available
