National advocacy and advice service for people with blindness and vision impairment in Australia. Deals with community access issues, social security and discrimination. Their website has a wide range of information on relevant issues.
Provides information and telephone counselling to glaucoma sufferers and/or family members, brochures in different languages available.
Guide Dogs NSW/ACT provides a range of client focused free services including mobility and orientation services to people with a vision impairment or low vision. Services are provided to people of all ages and all languages (interpreter services can be organised). Not all services involve the use of guide dogs. Guide Dogs also offer Cortical scanning training programs for people who have acquired brain injuries.
A free low vision advisory service is available at Macular Disease Foundation Australia?s Sydney office. This service involves an orthoptist working closely with clients to assess individual needs and determine which aids and technologies can help to best maintain independence and quality of life. This free service is offered by the Foundation in collaboration with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. Those living in regional areas can also access the service when visiting Sydney, however bookings are essential.
The Macular Disease Foundation is the peak body representing MD sufferers and their carers. The Foundation aims to promote awareness, prevention, intervention, education, research and support of MD.
Lionel Solomon is an optometrist and contact lens practitioner who will visit clients at their own home or in a nursing home in the Sydney metropolitan area.
